rock 'n roll

if jonny v's argyle armada is a new and positive story for competitive cycling, then michael ball's rock racing team is surely the antithesis. about a month ago i came across the story of this dork stick while reading the bike snob nyc blog. there is some indication that this guy, as labeled by the nyc bike snob, is the vince mcmahon of the cycling world. evidence of his ideas and views on how he sees himself as a force to be reckoned with in the cycling world can be found here (read the "pro road cycling" entry) , here and here (follow this by reading bike snob's parody of the letter mr. ball would send to steve hed of hed cycling - funny stuff). scary thing is that the honourary captain might become a member of michael ball's rock n' rolling train of mayhem. just because you have more money than you know what to do with doesn't necessarily give you the insight and ability to put together a professional cycling team - if it did, why would you choose cadillac escalades as the team's support vehicle?

At the end ofthe day, I'm not entirely convinced about all this--especially the good guy vs. bad guy spin that seems so easy to take here. Mainstream media will no doubt jump all over JV as the One to usher in a new era. And that's great, as far as it goes. But they need to make Ball into the incarnation of evil in order to make JV out to be the saint they need him to be. So I remain somewhat skeptical about all the negative hype around him (though some if it is no doubt justified), just as I remain a little wary of jumping on the Slipstream bandwagon all too quickly (though much of it is no doubt justified). I think we need them both, and I have no problem rooting for them both.

Besdies, Ball may be the only guy to give the honrary captain a chance to ride again. See the recent interview with the HC at velonews.com, including an interesting (and I think right, if overstated) take on Slipstream.

in a way i do agree that the good guy vs bad guy thing as a vehicle for drawing a lot of attention to an event or match-up. people like to jump all over a bad guy and root for the good guy; it makes for interesting, if not over-inflated drama. however, the "i will do whatever i want because i have wad of cash and over inflated ego" attitude that ball has comes off as being juvenile. yes the system sometimes needs a shakeup, and new people with new ideas and methods need to be interjected to make these changes - i just think it is more effective to be understated and to go about your business rather than drawing that much attention to yourself and putting a large target on your back. ball is objectionable not because of his interest in cycling, more because of his apparent love of himself and the need to inflate his own ego. jonny v maybe no better a person than ball, he is just a little easier to stomach.

i wonder if floyd will find it possible to work for someone like ball who does not suffer failure and has said if you lose your out - sometimes you just have a bad day or race.

Ball has even said some of the legandary quotes like" win or your fired" have been taken a bit out of context by the press....that said he's getting press, and making road racing cool....can't hurt the sport anymore than it is, Imo.
