Cyclocross in the News

But not in a good way. Here.

Such a shame. Grass heals very quickly and I would think the city would be happy to have people coming out to enjoy the parks and making good use of them. Glad our city has the sense to know better.

Just more fodder to support society's generalized hatred of cycling. Disrupting their driving and now their pleasant fall strolls through the park with Rufus... sigh.

And it did happen here too didn't it? Hence the birth of the Labarrier race?

At the same time- the cyclist responses to this article seem to demonstrate a high level of education on the subject- and their "tone" is one of sensibility and explanation rather than just retaliations to their opposition. Very honorable despite a frustrating situation.

My take on the Omand's Creek/LaBarriere scenario was that the proposed course *needed* to cut across the baseball fields (a park management no-no) - a constraint of trying to cram a 2.5km+ course into a small park.

MUCR has actively been discussing the issue of park impact for 2 seasons now - and it continues to evolve as the sport grows. Organizers are getting better at managing impact, with much help from the City of Winnipeg parks folks.

One option that still hangs out there is the idea of a dedicated park space for cyclocross. We (MUCR, or the MCA) could approach the City with a proposal to use and maintain a section of a park for the cross season. This is how, for example, Maple Grove Rugby Park works. It seems to be the way the sport is going in the US - Kentucky now has 2 purpose-built cyclocross parks, one of which is being constructed for world championships.

In such a scenario, we'd have more control over course design, impact management and we'd have more secure access to a place to hold races.

But... would you want to race multiple events at the same place? (even if they were on different courses)

And... seems to me like an extreme (and administratively burdensome) solution to an issue that can be managed in other ways.

The absolute best thing about cross is the variety of it. I'm a total newbie but the creativity and the effort put into creating a new (and often frustrating) challenge at these races is fantasitic and appreciated.

@Kim - my thinking exactly.

Our newly re-elected knight in teeth-n-gums would NEVER do that to us.

I have tried to start the discussion about the issue with the venues. Road side is struggling with venues already and 'cross will sooner or later face the same challenge. Maybe this is not such a big deal but I think we need to be proactive before we end up getting no permits for one reason or another.

So who's up for the cross race in ND next weekend?

I've thought about ND. In fact, Rachel mentioned it this morning. But then I checked out the results: the field is small (less than 20) and the races short (under 35 min). That kind of takes away the incentive. But if we were to get a good crowd to head south, that might change the equation.

I remember a shirt being made for the last time we raced in ND, I wonder how it's doing? I'd go but heading to ND makes the drive to Edmonton a bit more appealing...plus that was the coldest 'cross race ever if I remember...

ps-doesn't living on a flood plain kind of nix the damage that a couple of skinny cyclist do to the grass in MB in the Fall? eg: Belgium club and April....

What about fat cyclist(s)? I dig five inch deep into the grass when I go.

I'm driving down to Minneapolis next weekend and will do the state champs on Sat. Sunday is a big maybe. And sorry, our truck will be loaded with Ikea coming back so can't share a ride.

Minneapolis . . . tempting.

I was going to send out an email re: road trip. I'm registered for Minneapolis on Saturday, but the idea of helping them build in ND is very appealling. I counted 32 for last weekend's race there in two categories (listed in separate pages in the results), the A race was 60 minutes.

Multiple pages? I missed that. That changes everything. ND is back on the radar screen. It would be great to see a decent sized group head down there and guilt them into returning the favour by heading north next year.

I've sent them an email and am proposing a Red River (or Great Plains or whatever you want to call it) series for next year. Maybe a race or two in Wpg, one in Altona or St Malo (since they're sort of half way) and finish in G.F. Benefits for everyone.

Good thinking Gary. That's why you're the CX Czar.
