Same Day Results [Updated]

Thanks guys. Much appreciated. This is how you do it, people. Full results here. But the ones that really matter are as follows:

The Darkness:

LeAnn - 1st = 25 points
Craig - 5th = 18 points
Chris - 9th = 13 points
Penner - DNF = 0 points


The Whiteness:

Gilles - 1st = 25 points
Kevin - 3rd = 20 points
Mike - 4th = 10 points (19 divided by two, and rounded up) 19 points

It all adds up to a narrow 56 - 55 win for the FGBC. Boo-yah! A 64-56 win for the Crybabies.

WNR #6 Report

Somehow finishing last is so much more gratifying when you are still able to contribute to a cause as lofty as the FGBC - RRR FGD Challenge. I think there were ten of us so-called experts. So my crappy effort should still be good for a few points. The Fraggle finished last too. Fortunately, her last place finish nets us 25 points. That's the same as Gilles picked up for winning the expert race. I'm not sure where the Cricket ended up. But I'm happy to say that he didn't catch me. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about KK. He passed me sometime during the second lap. As for the President, he discovered just before the race that his frame had a fairly significant crack in it. He decided he would give it a go anyway. That did not prove to be a wise decision. He lasted about 1 km before having to pull the plug. Most are no doubt wondering why he elected to race with a broken frame. But we at the FGBC Dept. of Petty Rivalries are trying to figure out why he did not just run the rest of the course. After all, points were at stake. The only thing we came up with is that running sucks.

Mike dropped by after the TTT. He said Cousin Adam was nowhere to be found. That's too bad, because Mike was looking for a partner too. The two of you could have ridden together. As it is, Mike finished 4th working together with some dude named Ivan. Ivan gets half of those points though. Maybe we should approach him about selling them to us.

The WNRS was awesome this year. Thanks to the Olympia Club, and especially Kevin, for all the work that went into it.

TNR Report

Summer. Finally. We rode through the Ass. Park and Forest out to Fort Whyte Centre, where Dave P hosted a little Q & A sesson on his plans for a wakeboard/cycling utopia within the city limts. It all sounds very exciting.

There were some close calls: we were ambushed by three racoons who seemed to think it would be funny to dart out of the bushes in front of us as we rode by. It wasn't. And Jonny G, who convinced us not to race so that he could save himself for his big ultimate showdown this weekend, was involved in an incident that seemed well on its way to the land of tragic irony before slamming on the brakes and stopping just short. It seems the boards on the floating boardwalk are just about the right width to swallow a 23 mm tyre. Jonny's tyre got swallowed and he got pitched over the bars. But not only did he avoid falling in the water, he managed to land on his feet. No harm done. He survives to kick ass this weekend.

At the klubhaus, The Impaler joined us one last time before his big existential excursion out west. Jonny passed around some sweet cycling caps that Starlene has been making. They are hot. Very hot. The music, however, was not hot. Glass Tiger? Wierd.

In the parking lot, as we were preparing to head home, we were treated to an odd and smelly but nevertheless strangely impressive rubber burning show by some hot shot in a pimped out pickup truck. This stunning visual display was set to the words of a drunken parking lot philosopher who was sitting on a log just behind the pickup. The profundity of his speech, however, was unfortunately marred by his somewhat less than perfect diction. That's too bad, because it seemed like he had something interesting to say before he fell off the log he was perched upon and tumbled to the ground as we rode away.

I think we're all caught up now

Results from the Aug. 4 Handicap RR are finally up. Cousin Adam was 16th, just behind Mike, who finished 14th. An 8-6 win for RRR.


Two more races tonight, both in BHP. The WNRS wraps up at Bur Oak, while the roadsters will be doing a two-person TTT.

Introducing TNCX

[Updated 3:57 pm] We will hold off for one more week. Too many people who want to be there can't race. And the FGBC is, after all, all about the people. We will, however, scout out some course options.

Enough talk. Tonight, we race. Urban. Dark. Raw. Awesome.

Cross Labs

How do you get from this to this?


It starts this Thursday. After that, it's every Wednesday through the end of September.

There will also be a series of Saturday morning sessions that will be fast-paced training rides. These rides will go for about an hour, starting at 7:00 am. Following post-ride coffee, you should be home by 9:00.

Cross season officially starts with tommorow's Tuesday Night Ride. Stay tuned for more info on a little cx treat from the FGBC.

The MCA Website Still Sucks

Although it probably should be, it is not altogether dead. The provincial road race took place twelve days ago. And the results have just now been posted. A portion of our dues presumably goes toward paying someone to run the website. I think we should ask for that portion of our money back, if only as a symbolic gesture by which to say "this bullshit is just unacceptable."

In any case, Mike, Chris, and Gilles were all at the race for RRR. While it sounds like they had a rough time, they still finished 7th, 9th, and 10th respectively in the "Master B" field. Nice work boys. That adds up to 40 points for the white-shirted side. The FGBC was not represented. So once again, it appears that lead has changed hands. Except that it didn't. It only seems that way because these results weren't up when they should have been. That gave the impression that we took back the lead with our big points haul at Bur Oak, before giving it up again just now. But that's not what happened. The provincial road race allowed RRR to extend a lead they'd had for a while. And our WNR showing allowed us to narrow the gap considerably and prevented a huge RRR lead from getting out of hand.


Note that the score reflects an adjustment to the last Wednesday Night Race. Some dude who finished ahead of the President and the Secretary was omitted from the original results. Now that he's been added, they are bumped down a spot and each receive one less point. Which means our score is 805 instead of 807. But you wouldn't know any of that by looking on the MCA website. It's not up yet. Then again, it has only been ten days. But the Olympia Club has had it up since the day after the race.

MTB provincials are today. It sounds like the Cricket will be there, along with RRR's Chris D.

Thursday Anticipation

There are still a few other things on the calendar--mtb provincials this weekend, one more race at Bur Oak, the Birch enduro next weekend, grass track(?), not to mention a bunch of road racing. But let's face it, all of these are just a series of placeholders to keep us from getting too distracted before cyclocross season begins. We at the FGBC, at least, are finding it hard to think about anything other than cx right now. Maybe that's because it's felt like fall for a couple of weeks already. But more likely, it's because cx is awesome. So awesome, in fact, that it makes you wonder why we even bother with anything else.

Cyclists Are Good Basketball Players

That's what the honorary captain says. In order to prove it, he has challenged Utah Jazz sharpshooter Deron Williams to a combined ITT/3 point shooting challenge this Friday. That is awesome. More here.

Some members of the FGBC once played on a basketball team together. We were not very good at all. I suppose that means we should not consider ourselves real cyclists. Oh well. We are exactly what we are. Our being exactly what we are allowed us to enjoy numerous moments of genuine hilarity, such as the time Coach Unger and his foul mouth racked up a string of ten consecutive technicals, thereby turning what looked like it might be a narrow come from behind win for us into a rout by the other team.

Insatiable

The VP Road writes:

From the garage that brought you Yerba Cross and 24 Hours of Coens comes another not-so-new road bike for the stable. With the President there for advice and encouragement, the Secretary and I wrenched into the wee hours on not one, but two fine steeds. Lots of Phil’s grease, even more vodka. Good times.

Last night’s race was literally the first time I put shoe to pedal on this thing, and there were no problems, so I’m back in the saddle while the Sannino awaits repairs.

Apparently the Puch will be making her long awaited debut next week as well.

TNR Report

There was a ride. I wasn't there, but I hear it was awesome. And then there was a gathering at the clubhouse. I was there, and it was certifiably awesome. Down at the north end of the table, where I was seated, the talk was mostly about cyclocross. T minus 25 days!

Yes, we are still waiting for Olympia to change their TBDs into actual locations. Until then, the MUCR advertising campaign must remain virtual. But it sure would be nice if these postcards would actually show up somewhere, don't you think?

The FGBC, at any rate, is ready to go. In addition to Southern Cross, this year Menno Cross moves out of the black market and sqarely onto-the-grid. It was always awesome. This year it will be even awesomer.
