Thursday Anticipation

Sin boldly. That is what Martin Luther is said to have written to Philipp Melanchthon. It is also the name of the Nordic Cross series for 2010.

It all started on the Tuesday Night Ride a few weeks back. It came out of the blue, really, when we were on our way back from the Poosher's palace. Ian put the question to me this way: among the seven deadly sins, why has there been such a singular preoccupation with gluttony in FGBC races. My immediate reaction was defensive. I pointed out that the annual winter 24 hour race could be read as an interpretation of sloth, at least to the extent that it was possible to accumulate laps last year by watching a Coen brothers movie. But Gianni is right. We do seem to have a special fondness for gluttony. Think of the infamous Burger Cat race. And last year's egg nog/Coke chugging race, among others. So this winter we will attempt to make things right. Each race in the Nordic Cross series will be envisioned against the background of one of the seven deadly sins. In the same manner that Hara Curry flirts with the sin of gluttony, you can rest assured that they will all be tastefully done.

The dates have been tentatively chosen and the sins have been assigned. In no particular order, they are as follows:

Greed - Darryl/Penner
Lust - Chris/Jonny G
Envy - Ian/Hal
Pride - KK
Gluttony - Vic/Juan
Sloth - Tomek
Anger - Brad

Now all we need is some snow. The racing is scheduled to begin on Dec. 13. Look for the dates to be announced shortly.

i think we should add an 8th race of repentance at the end.

or possibly one where we do all in sickening excess, as some sort of penance. It could be the 24 hour...

That is assuming that these races involve the commission of the sins. Maybe they will reward the ability to rise above our baser instincts.

I don't think it would take a lot of creativity to make each race somehow about beer.

I think we should insure the presence of an old priest and a young priest at each race. Just to be safe.

I have biking induced sins and must confess ...

I too (we already know about G) am ENVIOUS of the Butter Belt and would no doubt take great PRIDE in wearing it around at biking/social events if able (not that anyone else would do that)!
But this pales to the great ANGER I had for most of this bike racing season, due to my sh#*ty (almost another sin there!) work schedule that kept me from races and lead to SLOTH-INESS and GLUTTONY as I stewed in comfort ... all the while wondering ??? ... was it my GREED for more bikes and LUSTING over more bike accessories that had brought down the wrath??? ... NAH!

Heh KK, need some help with the PRIDE race?
It could be my penance [:-)

Me? You think I need help? You're so far below me, Tom.

And if you struggle with envy, have I got something to show you.

KK ... Oh Yah!? Hmmm ... well you do 'currently' hold the Butter Belt of Power! What did you actually do to get it anyways?

Envy? ... do tell.

But - you will be envying my secret new trails/bike event plan though - big time! Still secret though ...

Btw, my offer of help stands

Tom - let's talk at the next TNR. I'm not too proud to take help from one of the brains behind the Bourkvale Park race.

And if you have secret trails, I have a secret trail bike.

Brilliant, courageous...wish I was there to ride. The weak effort at winter riding is a cross race in january called 'Chilly Cross' which will most likely not even see snow on the ground.
